Chapter 4 - The Front Fenders

I knew the front fenders and sand skirts were going to be tough. The problem is that since I switched to the Formations one piece cast transmission cover I now had to also use the front fenders from Formations. No problem except that I had to make them fit to the Legend sand skirts. Turns out that the two pieces fit together perfectly well. For a moment I thought I was going to catch a break and have all of these pieces come together in that sort of modeler’s nirvana world where everything fits just right.

Pop. That’s sound of my bubble bursting.

I quickly found out that while those two parts fit together the inner part of the sand skirt was completely the wrong shape for the cast transmission cover. I carefully cutout new pieces from plastic sheet and got them all fit to the sand skirt. I then fit the outer piece of the sand skirt and used the slightest amount of putty to clean up the minor gaps in the whole assembly.

I realized pretty early on that there’s no way to fit the front fenders with sand skirts unless I also mounted the drive sprockets. So at this point I just dry fitted the fenders. It was pretty obvious that they weren’t going to fit right. The mounting of the new transmission cover to the hull was just different enough to cause a problem. So I took out my favorite resin tool, the hairdryer, and did a little adjustment to the shape. It’s still not right but it’s now close enough that I can paint the inside and make final adjustments when I’m ready to mount the assembly.
