Chapter 13 - The Turret

Originally I had planned on a number of chapters relating to how I built the turret. However, once I got going, it was so straight forward that I realized I could summarize it in a single, relatively short chapter.

To be frank, Legend really did a fine job with the turret. Construction is simple, the instructions are clear, the parts come off the resin blocks without a problem and fit together great. I did little more than clean them up and glue them in place.

I did add the handles to the split hatch per the instructions. Also I noticed that many of the photos of desert Shermans show the split hatch rotated so the hatches open front and back and the .50 cal MG is over the top of the turret. In a number of photos the front hatch is closed as I’ve represented it. I suspect this was done to minimize the amount of dust coming into the tank.

I did add the Formations early style .50 cal MG (F019) since that seems to be the most commonly seen version on the early Shermans. Assembly of this gun was also straight forward and the instructions are quite clear on where everything goes.

Before I glued the turret ring to the turret, I painted the entire interior flat black.

All said and done. This was the easiest and most straight forward part of the project.
