Chapter 15 - Painting - Part 2

I had originally planned to summarize the rest of the painting in a single chapter and include a collage photo to show the work. However, after looking at the collage photo, I realized that it would be tough to actually see what I was doing. Instead, I will be posting four short chapters on the painting.

I thought a lot about how I was going to paint the green camouflage. Being a hard edge camouflage, I had to consider if I could mask the areas to be painted. I ruled out traditional tape based masking immediately since all of the small bits sticking out would make it nearly impossible and I was convinced that I’d end up breaking many of the small items (most notably the tools).

I also thought about using liquid mask but I was again concerned about breaking the small parts when I tried to remove the mask. Finally, I looked into using the ‘silly putty’ (modeller’s clay) approach. It seemed the most plausible but I was still concerned about breaking the small stuff.

In the end, I decided that I would free hand the camouflage and go back with a fine brush to make a hard edge. I realize many of you are reading this and thinking I’ve gone completely insane. I know it sounds like an odd approach but I’ve used it before with good results. I will attempt to show how I do this in the next few chapters.

The first step is to draw the demarcation lines on the model. I use a mechanical pencil for this since it comes off and it isn’t too dark. See the photo.
