Chapter 18 - Dry Brushing

With the camouflage complete, it was time to do some dry brushing. I didn’t see much point in dry brushing the sand colored areas since there are not many colors much lighter than the sand. I did dry brush the green areas with a medium tan color.

I used a wide, flat brush and made sure to drag it over all of the surface. Doing this has the effect of brushing the flat parts of the model as well as the raised areas. I know it sounds a little odd but the result is to give the paint a bit of a worn out look. For this model, I especially wanted to get the green to ‘wash’ into the sand. The photos I’ve seen show that the tanks in North Africa got pretty dusty. I don’t want to cover my model in dust since that tends to wipe out much of the contrast. Instead, I used this technique to simulate the dust build up which is most visible on the darker, green areas. Later, I will follow this up with some local dusting to complete the effect.

Although I didn’t use traditional dry brushing on the sand areas of the model, I decided to try out a new technique (at least for me) to simulate wear and tear. Since most of the wear and tear on the Shermans in the desert was from the gritty sand and people walking on the vehicle, I got to thinking that I might be able to actually dry brush this effect.

I used Testors Model Master Burnt Umber and a very dry brush. I stroked it lightly over the raised areas where boots would likely rub the sand against the paint. I focused heavily on the areas around the hatches, the fuel caps, and the flat top surfaces of the hull and turret. Trust me when I say, ‘less is more’. I made it a point to have a very subtle amount of this since I was quite concerned that I’d end up with far too much wear.

I was pleased with the results and found the process to be pretty simple and easy to control.
