Chapter 29 -The Base - Part 2

As I looked at the base, I decided that there were three problems.

1. The sand is too light
2. The well is too dark
3. The sand looks too uniform. More like a beach than a desert

In order to fix this, I decided that I’d need to add some rocks and paint the sand. First, I sprayed the whole base with Woodland Scenics Cement. This will fix the sand to the base so it can be painted.

Then I decided to add a couple of shallow rock out-croppings. I made these using Woodland Scenics Molds. If you haven’t tried the molds, do so. They are rubber molds and you just pour in Plaster of Paris and let them dry. Being rubber, you can simply peel the molds away from the Plaster of Paris and presto, instant rocks. The molds are reusable and come in many sizes and shapes. I had a few already poured rocks in my little box of rocks so I pulled them out.

I traced the area where the rocks would go on the base and scraped off the sand in that area. If I’d planned ahead, I could have just pressed the rocks into the wet Fixall but this was a repair job so I had to do it the hard way. I glued the rocks in place with Elmer’s glue and put a little sand down around the area to blend them into the base.

I also added a number of small, loose rocks around the base to add a little more variation to the surface.

Then I painted the whole thing in Tamiya Khaki (not the well). I went back and painted the sand areas (but not the rocks) in a cloud pattern with Tamiya Buff. I didn’t paint the indentations from the tracks so I could get a little more color variation.

When this had all dried, I dry brushed the rocks with a tan and then again with a lightened tan. I dry brushed the sand with Testor’s Model Master Sand and tried to do much less dry brushing in the track indentations. The result is a better color than before with more variation in the color. Also, the dry brushing picked out a lot of the surface variation I had put in using the Fixall.

All said and done, I’m glad I went back and redid the base. I think the overall look is more appropriate for the North African Desert.
