Chapter 1 - Interior - Lower Hull Preparation
In order to add an accurate interior the first thing to do was assemble as much of the hull as possible so that the rear firewall and middle strengthening frame can be added. The kit's lower hull has strengthening fillets that must be cut out if an interior is to be added. I removed these with a pair of flush-cutting nippers and cleaned up with sandpaper. I then glued the front and rear armour plates, DML parts. D52 and D51, these provide strength to the lower hull again.
The DML hull interior sides need "paneling" so they are flush from front to back. A section of 0.010" sheet styrene, I use Evergreen sheet styrene exclusively, was added first to the inner section and then a panel of 0.015" over top of this. I let this dry for 24 hours, puttied up the joins and sanded smooth. Now I had a completely set of flat side plates on which to build the interior. I also added a panel of 0.010" sheet to the inside of the hull front. This is a lot easier than filling the knock-out marks and does scale up the hull front to 50mm. This panel isn't visible unless the brake inspection hatches are left open, I haven't decided if I'll leave these open yet... but I do want to leave that option available.
Since I chose not to use the kit's fenders a strip of 0.035" styrene must be added along the top of the lower hull sided. This compensates for the thickness of the kit fenders (I mentioned they where thick!) so they hull will assemble correctly. When these were dry I sanded then to shape. Photograph #1 shows the lower hull at this point. |
