Chapter 12 - Suspension and a couple other goodies
One thing that folks seem to be curious about is the TMD suspension. Looks great, cleanup is a real pain in the behind. Though it's probably unavoidable due to the design of the M3 suspension system. Other than the return roller, it assembles like most other DML/Italeri style bogie units. But it is delicate when finished.
Since I was on a roll with my scratchbuilding, and I stumbed upon a few more bits of reference, I went ahead with some additional pieces. 5 headsets for the crew, and the splash shield for above the engine. Oddly, none of the diesel sherman engine sets I've seen on the market include this piece. I'll be showing it removed from the compartment in the final display, but I did check that it's the correct size.
I also made a decent goof, and lost my pictures when I did the basecoat for the whole hull. Oops. The hull was done in the same initial method as James Wechsler's build, in fact I decided to use the same sand color as him. The ModelMaster sand is slightly lighter than the color chips provided in Mike Starmers book, which will be fine for the scale and some fading. |
