The Lower Hull

I’m not sure why I always start with the lower hull, probably because I actually read the instructions in the kits when I was a kid and now I’m stuck following that order. Regardless, I like building from the bottom up. I’ve built a lot of Shermans, about 17 so far, and one of the most frustrating parts is adding the details to the lower hull. I almost always have to get out the punch and die set to make hex bolt heads for where the transmission cover is mounted to the hull. Many times, I’ll need to fill the sponsons. These tasks aren’t hard, but they take up a bunch of time.

So what a relief it was to use the Formations lower hull. No additional rework was necessary. I fitted the rear hull to the lower hull, and test fitted the exhaust system. I’ll add it after the upper and lower hull parts are assembled together. Also, I trimmed the lower hull to fit with the upper hull. The Formations lower hull isn’t designed to fit any specific kit so it took be a bit of time to trim it to fit the upper hull. I also had to thin the sponson fillers to get a flush fit. Fortunately, Formations uses a soft resin so it didn’t take too long. About the only thing I added was the handle for the rear access door. I also drilled out the holes on the towing flanges on the rear hull.

Too simple.
