Here is one of the front fenders mounted on a Humbrol can with clay and sitting on the vac former. raising the piece up allows the plastic to be sucked down around the part, Greatly improving your chances for a successful forming.
The frame with the plastic is put into your (or your wifes oven, GET PERMISSION FIRST!) at about 250-300 Degrees. I suspend it over the edge of a cake pan, The plastic will soften, wrinkle and sag and then tighten up again. This takes less than a minute. You can leave the oven open a little to observe this. When I think its ready I check by touching the plastic with the eraser end of a pencil. It will push into it very easily but when you take the pencil away the dent will shrink right out again. The plastic is ready. open the oven, I put the box right on the oven door, Turn on the vaccum that is plugged into the box (I use a little hand held Oreck) reach into the oven (using mitts or pot holders) grab the frame by the edges pull it out and simply push it down over the part.
As soon as the frame meets the styrofoam it will create a vacuum and suck the plastic tight around the master. This will happen in the blink of an eye! shut off the vacuum, pull the box off the oven door, close the oven back up and your done. If it doesn't work, you can pull the master out of the plastic and reheat it. It will shrink right back flat again, reguardless of how deep or large the molding is, it's pretty neat to watch!
