James,

This is a highlighted area I was talking about. This particular picture was taken on a M4A3E8. I don't have a clear picture of this area on the M4A4 that I have pictures of but what I do have shows the rear most plate in place with engine decking removed. So you actually may have been correct adding a weld bead in this area on the M4A4. All other Shermans however do not have a weld bead here because of engine decks are removed for engine replacement.

I guess I'm just a Sherman nut and the bottom even gets my attention (such as my M51). Just ignore my rants and raves.
