Steps 1,2, and 3

Now that the major hull pieces that I glued in chapter 1 are dry and solid, I have begun construction and have completed steps 1,2, and 3. I've also started part of step 6 but will need to do some PE work to finish step 6.

Step one sees the attachment of the front tow hook extensions (I puttied the seams, and added weld beads, see the arrow in picture "A") and attached the lower suspension. These parts all fit flawless.

According to Gary Edmundson in his Osprey "Building The Hetzer" the front of the vehicle was heavier due to the extra armor and main gun. The front leaf springs for each side are molded by Tamiya with more "compression" displayed, thus the model should display a nose down attitude once the wheels and tracks are installed.

In the previous chapter I noted that the four corners of the rear upper hull, rear lower armor, side armor, and sponsons all meet in a bit of a four way stop. See the arrows in picture "B" and it will make sense. I'm sure if I followed the kit instructions to a "T" that there would be no problem but I wanted to play it safe and not have any gaps to fill. The upper and lower hull are still dry fitted at this time (see "C") and the rear upper deck is simply sitting loose in picture "D". The fit of the rear plates is terrific and any cleanup has been minor.

Only the leaf springs needed their mold lines attended to.

I need to surf the net and thumb through my books now for any closup pictures to determine if there are any missing weld beads or bolt heads around the lower hull. I suspect I may need to add more weld beads around the lower rear armor plate and possibly some bolt heads around the mounting flanges of the return rollers. I don't know at this time if those roller stanchions were welded or bolted to the lower hull side.

Stay tuned for more chapters this weekend!

~Mark
