Michael,

I first want to say that having seen the the TMD castings over the last few years as this kit took shape, and then finally seeing the complete M8 kit at Joe's table at the Huntsville IPMS show this fall, I have nothing but praise for the kit. It is an amazing achievement and I quickly e-mailed Karl to congratulate him on his work. I would not want to make any comment that would be taken as anything but positive about the TMD kit. But I do have a few statements concerning your choice of using my Formations lower hull for comparison.
1. My lower hull way designed to build an M5A1, and was scaled using scans of the ordnance drawings of the M5A1.
2. The kit does include the option of an escape hatch. Early production M5 and M5A1s were not built with the floor escape hatch. I made parts so that the builder could pick the hatch or the symmetrical stiffening ribs on the hull floor.
3. The ordnance drawings of the hull side plate measure out to 31" by the scale on the drawing. While not marked with this dimension there is a scale on the drawing and I doubt that I was off by more than a 1/2 inch. I measured the master with a Murphy's rule this morning and it is a scale 31 inches.
4. No one to my knowledge has ever requested in the three years of production to purchase my lower hull as an update for Tamiya's M8, and the upper hull was never designed for the hull top or front plates of an M8. As you have also noted there is no attempt at interior, so it would not be very useful for this.
5. The differences in the hull bottom and floor, and engine access panels exist in the production of the M5A1. From what I can gather the access panels on the TMD kit are accurate for early production models. The pattern of panels on the bottom of my kit were copied from the ordnance drawings and an existing example at the Veterans Museum in Huntsville Alabama. I spent a very oily day under thsi tank taking measurements for the master.
6. My M5A1 kit has been recently discontinued due to the impending release of the AFV Club M5A1 kit, so all of this is probably moot.

Michael, I hope that the Formations kit sample that you have has the escape hatch part in it. If not I'll be happy to replace it. I just wanted to set straight any questions that there might be as to the accuracy of the two kits brought about by some of the assumptions that you have made based on the limited reference material you are using. I look forward to watching the progress of the continued blog. The M8 looks like a stunning kit.
