Subject:  Detailing the Upper HullList thread.

It was at this point that I masked off the open hull top and applied spray primer to the body of the vehicle, as well as to the assembled gun, the rubber-band tracks and the other few remaining parts still on the sprue (at this point, mostly the gunshield).

I then added most of the few remaining detail parts: the girder joining the back of the gun mount to the hull, the jack, the exhaust, and the aerial holder. I scribed a groove along the length of the latter. I will as usual be making an aerial from stretched sprue, but I won't be doing that until almost everything else has been completed. It appears that many (not all) of these vehicles were modified with a new fixed antenna mount on the left rear of the gun shield; I couldn't find any confirmation as to whether that meant that the original folding antenna was removed. In the absence of specific information to the contrary I'll build this one as having both antennas, but the original on the right side will be folded down.

As I indicated earlier, I will be fitting this vehicle with jerry cans on the left rear fender. The kit supplies five, but there is room for six and several of my reference photos show six being carried. Fortunately I have the spare cans from the previous Fujimi kit and I added one of those. Reference photos indicate that a simple bracket was welded onto the fender to hold the cans in place. The exact pattern seemed to vary somewhat from vehicle to vehicle (obviously a field modification, probably done when the vehicle arrived in North Africa) so I constructed a simple version using some polystyrene strips -- fairly simple to do, but another first for me. I'm pleased with the result. (The kit itself tries to suggest that the cans just magically stayed balanced on the fender.)

(Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of the unpainted work at this point! ... I keep having to remind myself when to stop and add some more info to the blog!)
