Hi again Bruce,
I suspect that this cage was to catch spent shells, but was equally useful for keeping in place personal effects!
I have a picture taken early in the WW2 which shows a Pzrjager 1 in action without this mesh guard. It shows a 3 man deck crew, one whom may be the loader, who is lying across the engine deck behind the gun.
I will attempt to post this shortly if it is of use to you!
