Glenn, the vehicle Tamiya based their box cover on (WH-202951) did not have the tools on the fenders (or on the cargo bed sides, as far as I can see from the one photo I have), but it did have the high-sided bed with cover (likely feldgrau w/ dunklegrau spots) erected.
If I'm seeing clearly, Tamiya also missed a four-armed white star decal on the windshield just under the tip of the left windshield wiper, and two rifles upright between the seat and dash offset to the "navigator's" side - he really wouldn't have had much leg room. Also, the headlight covers seem to be canvas slipovers with shiny, clear plastic or glass slit lenses rather than the solid insert types without lenses, and there is a plug or cover over the spotlight lens. (Reinhard Frank's Trucks of the Wehrmacht, A Photo Chronical, Schiffer Military History, pg 127) The wheel hubs can't be seen, but as the photo is dated June 22, 1941, this Blitz almost certainly had the 6-hole wheels without the reinforced springs.
This is very disappointing research on Tamiya's part. There are so many of the 6-hole wheels available that we modelers would have been much better off with a dedicated 1942 or later Blitz with 9-hole wheels that we could back-date as needed. A 4X4 version would also have been icing on the cake.
I hope fellow modelers don't put these comments down to carping or nit picking, The Tamiya cargo truck is an excellently molded kit (the spring bumpers aside - see my comment and drawing earlier), and I'm sure that the Wehrmacht could have operated at least some trucks with this particular configuration - it would be impossible to contradict with the usual field views available. Nevertheless, as you have mentioned, Glenn, Tamiya could have made this kit much more with so little more effort.
Yrs,
CTew
