I'm not sure 'hidden' entries would necessarily make a difference. Regular visitors will have a good idea what the standard will be any way. No one should be deterred from entering though. Results decided by a vote can throw up some unexpected out-comes. I've certainly seen some unusual winners on other sites. I think here it would be good to open up the voting to all TLers rather than just those who've entered though, just to encourage more overall participation and get a little 'buzz' around the competitions.
Of course, if the field of entries was a little bigger, there could be classes (OOB? under 16's?) introduced to encourage wider participation, but I guess that could well be a nightmare to administer.
