Hi Robert,
Thanks for the kind comments. When I started this project 8 years ago, the only PE available at the time was the Eduard set for Italeri's SdKfz 10/5 kit, which mounts the Flak 38 and has an armored cab. After I picked up the Italeri 10/5 kit and PE, I decided to backdate it to the earlier version mounting the Flak 30, which meant that a good deal of the PE would be useless, except for the parts specific to the vehicle proper.
Italeri released their 10/4 Flak 30 vehicle a few years ago and Eduard immediately followed with a new PE set for it. Unfortunately by that time I had already scratch built most everything I could have used in that new Eduard set, like the rifle racks, gun shields and some of the other smaller details. I've seen the instructions for the Eduard 10/4 set and I think you'll be able to make good use of most of it. I wish it had been available when I started my project!
In the end, I only used the dashboard and other cab details from the Eduard 10/5 set. Some of the vehicle-related parts common to both PE sets, like the screens for the drop sides of the gun platform, are incorrect so I decided to build them from scratch. In reality these halftracks and the heavier SdKfz 7/1 did not use a netting/mesh/screen in these panels. They were a sturdy grate capable of supporting the weight of a crew member walking on them. The only way I could replicate a 3 dimensional grate was to laminate together several pieces of screen. I used the smallest Aber screen I could find, #S-01, very fine, square netting/mesh.
The anti-slip treadplate (chequerplate) is a bit of an educated guess on my part. I looked closely at as many photos as I could find but never found a conclusive shot of the platform surface. I based my guess on photos that appeared to be taken at a 10-30 degree angle to the platform, mainly in the old Squadron/Signal German Halftracks book and the Schiffer Publication #43, German Medium Flak in Combat. These photos showed a significant difference in the way the light reflected off the surface, especially in relation the storage compartment doors in the platform. The doors appeared smooth while all the other areas seemed evenly dull or textured. It also just made sense to me that a flat surface, which was the primary crew fighting position and exposed to all types of weather, would have some sort of non-skid/anti-slip texture to it. Can you imagine crewing that gun on a smooth, slick steel surface in rain or snow wearing hobnail boots? As I said, it was an educated guess and it could be totally wrong. I used Aber #PP-04, small, raised dot pattern, which seems to be a common German pattern.
Drop me an email and I'll send you what photos I was able to download on the web. Hope this helps.
