Subject:  Re: [Gallery] BTR-T and DPM Urban Infantry Support VehicleList thread.

The BTR-T was based on "recycling" T-55 hulls into Heavy APC's. It was much more focused on the infantry carrier requirement. It's competition was from the BMPT based on the T-90 hull as new builds. The BMPT was focused on the infantry support requirements.

To make a long story short, the BMPT won and will be put into service this year with the Red Army and there are many interested export countries. The BMPT is now listed as a support tank, meant to take out secondary targets while the tanks concentrate on enemy MBTs. They also have a urban warfare role.

The BTR-T has not gotten any export sales and as far as I know there are only three prototypes: The initial mock-up , the BTR-T demonstrator, and the DPM demonstrator.
