 Subject:  Pz.IV ausf B/C chassis?List thread.

Lawrence,

You mentioned that Stupa #55 was based on Pz.IV ausf B/C, in a private mail to me the other day. I am sorry to say that I wasn't and still am not convinced, mainly because I have not had a chance to see the photo of the rear of this vehicle.

Pz.IV ausf B/C chassis is very much different from ausf D, and later, chassis in many ways.

For example,

1) The ausf B/C chassis has only two dumper/stoppers on the chassis side, whereas the ausf D or later chassis has five. The shape of the stopper on the ausf B/C chassis is also different from that on the ausf D or later chassis.

2) A small access hatch on the upper rear plate is round and hinged on the ausf D or later chassis. The hatch on the ausf B/C chassis is not round and is pivoted, rather than hinged.

3) The tow bracket on the lower rear plate of the ausf B/C chassis is much simpler than that on the later chassis.

The side view photo of Stupa #55 clearly shows that it has five, newer style stoppers. This makes me think it is more likely that the vehicle IS indeed based on the ausf E chassis, than it is on the ausf B/C chassis.

If the rear photo of Stupa #55 shows the point 2) and 3) above, then, I am judging wrong...

Kazutaka
