Kingtiger

This is Tamiya's King Tiger, rebuilt and repainted from a previous kit I wasn't happy with. I replaced the tool fittings and OVM with items from eduard, show modelling and ABER. the tow cable was made of picture hanging wire. The surface was pitted with diluted Tamiya putty and a dremel tool. The model was then primed with Mr. surfacer and then airbrushed with a solid red brown/ black mix. The hard edge scheme started with an application of dark yellow, making sure that a lot of the base coat showed through. The paint scheme was masked using masking tape and play doh. I used Tamiya's red brown and deep green for the camouflage pattern. The ambush spots were applied with a fine brush. Finishing consisted of a Glosscoat spray, A burnt sienna and black oil wash diluted in lighter fluid - a rag wet with lighter fluid was dragged downwards on the wash to create stains. rust and chipped paint were done by mixing some dark and rust colored pastels with Tamiya acrylic thinner and applying this mix to high wear areas. The model was lightly drybrushed with oils ( no white ! ) and then with some metallic grey. The model was then airbrushed with testor's dullcoat. A Light dusting of pastels to the entire tank in patches finished the model. The model represents the Tiger of Karl Bromann who served with the heavy SS tank battalion 503 around Danzig and Berlin in 1945. Photos of this tank show the ambush paint almost completely obscured by mud and dust. I tried to copy this finish but to a lesser extent so the camou would still be seen.
