'The Road to Bastogne'

Diorama by Eric Bachmann

I am 13 years old and this is my first diorama. The diorama is built to 1/72 scale. The 105mm M4 Sherman is completely covered in snow and it drives past a destroyed German Flak 88 on its way to Bastogne. The Kettenkraftkrad was delivering shells to the 88 but got blown over and spilled its ammo.

The Flak 88 is from Hasegawa and is a very good kit. However, the M4 Sherman driving past it is from Fujimi and is probably the worst kit on the market today. The tracks were too small, so they pulled my wheels up in a awkward way, and the gun barrel didn't fit right so that looks wrong. I may have gotten a little bit carried away with the snow on the tank.(Just because its my first use of snow.) The knocked over Kettenkraftkrad added a neat aspect to the diorama. It is from Academy, and came in a cool WWII Ground set. The ammo around it is from the 88 kit, and I actually put it there because I needed to take up some space. The broken tree was made by taking a knife to one and then painting the insides using Tamiya Flesh, and a little Tamiya Buff, and they actually make a pretty accurate color.

The base for the diorama is a piece of wood that I stained and the groundwork is plaster. The plaster was painted white and sprinkled with baby powder. Holes were drilled for the trees and the road was made by using a technique of mixing brown paint and baby powder to make it thicker. Finally the models were glued down and the diorama was finished off by taking dirt from outside and sprinkling it over the snow.

Tip: Go to a Michaels craft store for your ground work. Their bags of stuff are twice the size and half the price. DON'T BUY FROM THE HOBBY STORES!

Any comments/tips about my diorama would be greatly appreciated.
