Kubelwagen in Soft Sand

Diorama by Michael Bishop

This is Tamiya's Kubelwagen with Jaguar figures. The Luftwaffe figure was slightly modified with new arms and a helmet. The vignette depicts a kubel stranded in soft sand and the two inter-branch buddies are getting it back on solid ground. It was inspired by a pencil drawing in a book from a German combat artist. I have since seen the actual photo the artist used to work from and the scene originally happened in Russia. This was one of my first attempts at sculpting balsa foam into sand and rocks and the ground work went very quickly. The kubel was first sprayed a dark panzer gray and then the sand color and weathering were applied using ceramic paints. I can't remember specifically what colors but I have several in sand and dust shades that I use as washes and thin layers. The canvas top was carved from wren-shape and then cast in a rubber mold in resin. The palm insignias were all hand painted
