Type 95 HA-GO, Special Japanese Naval Forces. Saipan
Painted by: Mig Jimenez
Built by: Mandu
Model: Fine Molds
Tracks: Modelkasten
Gun Barrel: Scratch-built
After finishing the wonderful and perfect Fine Molds kit, we decided to paint it in a different, not typical Japanese camouflage. This Naval version is original, but it also allowed us enjoy the paint and weathering work more.
The base coat was Naval Grey from Gunze it was applied with an airbrush. The filters was the first step, they were a mix of dark brown enamel followed by grey colours applied in separate layers. After this, we applied washes or "pin washes" as some modellers call them. These are Humbrol (no. 33, 62 and 98) mixed with several brown oil shades.
The fading was made with professional oils, using blue, white and brown. We mixed these colours on the model's surface with a clean brush. Next we applied all of the small paint chips and scratches using a very dark brown and black enamel with a very small brush. We referred to real pictures to determine where we must place the chips.
Now it is time for the dust and mud! We applied a soft layer of Tamiya Buff with an airbrush to mark where we will place the pigments. The pigments where applied with a big soft brush. A mix of pigments P028, P030 and P026 was used and was fixed in place with turpentine. This was left to dry and for areas of heavy dust the operation was repeated. For the mud we mixed the same pigment colours with plaster and MIG Acrylic Resin. This mud was applied with an old brush and left to dry. Final touches were applied with dry pigments.
The oil stains and spots were made with dark brown paint mixed with gloss varnish in a 20/80 ratio. The stains were applied with brush to specific areas such as the engine area and wheels. The muffler and exhaust pipe was painted with Humbrol no. 62 as a base colour and P025, P024 rust and black P023 pigments. The tail light was first painted with Tamiya Marker Silver then a big drop of Tamiya Red Clear was applied. The look is very realistic if you haven't the red Grief lenses available.
