DML's BTR-80 changed to a BTR-80SSS satellite communications vehicle with a SP Designs conversion. (This is a older conversion, a more accurate and easier to build conversion is pending.)
I used the basic DML kit, added the SP Designs resin conversion (and the brass hand bars), and then did a small amount of detailing using spares box tools and Verlinden dry transfers.
As can be seen in the in progress photo, the main problem with the kit was the side access doors. Both lower sides had been molded as seperate parts with a seam from front to back and in the middle of the door, a very poor location. After much experimentation, I finally gave up, ground down the side door area flat, and scratchbuilt my own doors. I am assured that this particular problem with these kits has been addressed by making the entire door one piece and moving the moldings to the joint between the sides and the hull top piece. Thank goodness!
