I built this small scene to represent Italian Forces in North Africa. The Semovente is the old Tamiya kit with Modelkasten workable tracks. Some minor detailing was added with plasticard and copper wire. A 1/48th scale aircraft gunner sight was added to the Breda gun on top of the superstructure. Also some white metal and resin extra ammo personel equipment boxes were added inside the vehicle. Finally I drilled the muzzle brake with hand dremel.
Figures are modified Academy and Tamiya units. The cabin was made with balsa wood and clay. Groundwork is kitty litter and sand from a beach on the Blacksea part (North) of Istanbul. Some Academy jerrycans and barrels were added. Verlinden's North African sign boards were also used. The tripod is from Italeri.
I made the vine bottle and glasses from a clear sprue. Cups full of spagetthi were once the missile caps of Dragons' USS Ohio nuclear sub.
I used Tamiya acrylics, oil washes, pastel powder and acrylic filters to harmonize the whole scene.
My biggest mistake was on the exhaust mufflers, ( I should have studied them better before wrapping them with mesh). The other problem was the lack of an aiming tube in front of the target sight on the Breda machine gun. During the spring of 2004, this diorama won a 1st and a 2nd place in 2 different modelling contests in Istanbul.
