M4A1E9-76 Sherman, Indian Army, Circa 1965

Model by James Wechsler

This is a post WW2 remanufactured Sherman in service with the Indian Army. It has the spaced VVSS suspension (E9) that allows an inner row of 'duck bill' extenders and the 76mm M1 gun mounted in the 75mm turret (note that both of these modifications were actually tested during WW2 but not implemented until after that war when remanufacturing costs were a big issue).

The Indian Army acquired around 200 Shermans of various types and used them in the many wars with Pakistan (who also had about 200 Shermans).

The model is a kit bash (to clean out my spares bin). The hull is from the Academy M51 with the rear hull and engine deck from the Tamiya M4. The suspension is from Tamiya and the turret is from the Tamiya M4A3. The gun barrel is from the Legends set with a left over Jordi Rubio muzzle brake. The HVSS fender supports are the tubular design frequently used after WW2 and are made from scratch. The E9 suspension modifications are scratch built and the kit is detailed with left over photoetch also from the spares bin. The tracks are the awesome AFV club rubber bands with two sets of RHPS duckbills. The stowage is from several sets including an actual woven rug from Hudsen Allen!.

The figure with the turban is a modified Verlinden Afghan figure and the others are the Verlinden WW2 British Army Tank Crew set (the Indians used British uniforms back then) painted to reflect Indian skin colors.
