Two 10,5 cm K 18 auf Panzerselbstfahrlafette IV - "Dicker Max" prototypes were built in 1941 and issued to the 521 Panzerjäger Detachment for evaluation. Later, with a new muzzle brake and travel lock, they were sent to fight in the central russian front for field test. One vehicle was knocked out, the other one sent home and re-converted to Panzer IV Standard after considerable success against enemy armour. The "dicker Max" and "sturer Emil" affected the development of the later Tankhunters like the Nashorn and (of course) the Jagdpanther and Jagdtiger.
The model kit is by by On-Track Models and is very good. Although the instructions are not up to the same level, they are pretty vague on some of the smaller parts. I have added towing cables from Diotech, and workable early Panzer IV tracks from Friulmodel. The tank was painted with Tamiya Panzergrau while the markings are airbrushed and brush painted.
