Tiger 1 (Early Production)

This is a restoration project of Tamiya's Early Tiger 1 that I built back in 1998, it was on display in my local model shop in Peterborough (UK) when it was gutted by fire. I don't know how but everything in the display case survived but was badly smoke damaged hence the restoration. The first thing to do was to take all the tools of and then strip the paint of using oven cleaner. I used a Eduard etch set and some new tools and other parts that were left over from other tamiya Tiger kits.

I was inspired by the Tiger Angus Creighton built for the Tamiya model magazine (No63 29 August 1997) and thought I would try to replicate it in my own style. I never bothered with a primer coat letting the base coat of Tamiya XF-60 Dark Yellow do the job instead, this didn't matter to much as the model then received light coats of Tamiya White. When the paint had dried I drybrushed the model using Humbrol enamels, once again this was left to dry over night, the next step was to gloss everything and this was done by spraying three light coats of Johnsons Klear floor polish which makes a nice base for the decals. Weathering was done with Winsor and Newton oils for the washes and filters and pastels. The final step was to matt everything down with Polly Scale matt coat which was sprayed on.

The figure is from Crommwell models and was painted with oils and Humbrol enamels. The decals represent the Tiger Michael Wittman used in January 1944 on the Eastern front.
