PzKpfw IV Ausf E

Model by Michael Bedard

This is of one of my older models that I have been submitting to Track-Link. Hopefully viewers will see improvement of my models from these older ones compared to the newer models that I have been able to show. It may be interesting to see how a person’s skills change over time.

There is a lot of talk about the new DML PzKpfw IV Ausf E posted on Track-Link and other sites. Long before DML came out with their kit I built this model. I built it in the late 1980s, long before separate metal tracks, photo-etch and turned barrels. It is a mating of Tamiya’s PzKpfw IV Ausf D and Italaerei’s PzKpfw IV Ausf F. Some parts are scratch built, some swapped between the two kits and some details added from various materials. The tow cable was a very stiff black material that was mated to Tamiya ends. The whole project was to replicate a PzKpfw IV Ausf E from the old Squadron book. I sculpted a crew for this model that was offered by Commander’s for a while. I have to rebuild the figures and repaint them because the originals were cut apart for casting. I do have some photos of them prior to being cut up. This was to be another article in a series I was doing for Military modeler, but fell through because they weren’t paying for the article submissions.

The model was basically finished with Tamiya paints and Winsor/Newton watercolors. I used baking soda to texture the exhaust but as seen in the photographs has turned white over the years.

This is my version of a PzKpfw IV Ausf E 1980s style.
