M24 Chaffee

Model by Michael Bedard

I have been submitting some older models to Track-Link to hopefully show a modeler’s development. Many of these older models do not have much if any weathering. A lot of the models have scratch-built details or are close to out-of-the-box. I t may be interesting to see how a modeler’s technique, skill and interests have changed over a period of time.

When this model of the M24 Chaffee came out it was a great hit. By 2006 standards it is a bit mediocre. The main problem was that a lot of modelers wanted the World War II version and the Italaerei kit was post war.

I added a lot of details using Evergreen styrene plus some bits from Verlinden’s Sherman update. The engine screens were cut out and replaced with RR brass screen. The front was backdated to the World War II version and a set of Top Brass tracks to give the correct vintage. The model was finished about 1994. Tamiya paints, Winsor/Newton watercolor washes and kit decals were used to complete the model.

Italaerei has re-released this kit back to the World War II version. With all the goodies you can get for the kit now I would love to build it again.
