JS-2

Model by Bill Goodrich

This is the DML JS-2 (6012) built pretty much OTB. The only after market parts were the screens and turret railings. I was too cheap to buy the PE set so I used some bulk screen and etched out the openings. This resulted in the screen frame being too thick, but you cant have everything. I had no idea what would be visible under these screens so I made up a louver assembly. If anyone knows what should be there please let me know. The turret railing is made from the tie wire that comes with many toys made in China now to hold toy trucks and such in the display box. Its just the right diameter (I guess) and is soft and easily bent. Also it comes covered with a plastic tube sleeve that when removed would make a good hose or conduit.

This is not meant to represent any actual tank, just a general JS-2 coming out of a hard winter. I did the winter camo by spraying on Tamiya flat white (XF-2) and quickly scrubbing it with a fairly large paint brush dipped in water before it had a chance to set up good. I found that once you weaken the white like this it will begin to flake off when it dries, so fairly soon you need to seal it with a coat of dull coat. I did not put a mud texture on it because I didn’t want to cover up all the detail I had worked so hard to capture. Always a trade off. I know it would look more realistic covered in mud, but….

The green base is Model Master Russan Topside Green (#2122). “Mud” is Tamiya flat brown (XF-10) with various washes. I tried to put some muddy footprints on the turret by dipping an old figure in straight brown artist oil paint and stamping, I have not decided yet if it like the outcome, one thing for sure, it takes a LONG time to dry so handle with care (speaking from experience). Exhaust and gun soot with MMP powder Soot Black. Dry transfers (what you can see of them) by MIG Productions.
