M18 Hellcat

This is Accurate Armour’s M18 Hellcat that I finished in 1995. When I bought the kit it was discounted to $55 which is a huge savings. I found out because just after I bought it AFV Club and Academy announced that they were going to do the kit in styrene.

As far as multi-media kits go it is an alright kit. I found assembling the white metal and resin parts difficult in that they did not line up well and no matter how well I washed the pieces they did seem to bond well. I also found that the kit was not symmetrical in that the rear fenders one side lines up well with the hull and the other does not.

I replaced the .50call Mg and tools with Cal Scale brass items being that I felt the detail was better. I replaced the photo-etched front headlight guards with thin brass wire. The photo-etch pieces are flat and the real vehicle has bars. MV lenses were also added. The kit came with no markings so Tamiya kits (stars) and Pre-Size (now owned by Hudson & Allen I believe) rub-on markings were used. The markings hopefully represent the 637th Tank Destroyer unit in the Philippines. The model was finished with Tamiya and PollyScale paints, Winsor/Newton watercolor washes and Rustall for tracks.

Unlike the Academy kit there was no option for muzzle break, mantlet cover and turret storage. It isn’t a bad kit but for the price I would recommend the AFV Club or Academy kit.
