M3 Stuart, 5 RTR

Model by Dave Williams

This is the Academy M3 Stuart, with an MR Models "Horseshoe" resin turret. I wanted to model "Exe", a 5 RTR Honey, which had this particular turret as opposed to the kit one. There is a close up of Exe in "Tanks across the Desert" by George Forty.

It was built pretty much OOTB, although I did thin the lightguards down, change the armoured fuel tank covers for the earlier un-armoured ones and add lenses, stowage and so on.

The figure is from Verlinden, with a Hornet head.

The Honey was first primed with Pollyscale acrylic US OD, and then given a top-coat of a Tamiya mix of desert sand, with some of the green showing through. I then profiled some edges and fittings with a darker sand as the first weathering step. I then selectively washed the vehicle with an oil paint mix of ochres, white and burnt umber. Filters followed in white, blue, yellow on selected parts of the vehicle to break up the tone. I added some wear and tear with more Pollyscale OD to represent the sand colour being worn off. Finally, I then used Mig Pigments [Gulf War Sand and Europe Dust] mainly on the running gear and lower hull.

This was a really enjoyable and straightforward build. The resin turret was superb - I highly recommend it if you want to make your desert Honey slightly different. Steve Zalogas' Opsrey book "Modelling the M3/M5 Stuart Light Tank", and his earlier Squadron Signal "Stuart Light Tanks in Action" were my main references.
