As a prime mover for the legendary Acht Acht, the Sd.Kfz.7 became the most famous German half track. Krauss Maffei developed the machine in the early 1930ies. The KM 11, the final model was produced throughout the war. More than 12000 units were built by several manufacturers, more than 50% of them by Krauss Maffei. Even Breda of Italy built the type (with their own engines) and the British copied the design. The very much simplified Abschlussausfuehrung was a late war design to save metal as a restricted material.
Much has been written and said about the old Tamiya kit, which is still the only injection molded model of this interesting and important WW2 vehicle. Michael Molter built this model and I have painted and weathered it. It requires quite a bit of work to bring it to an up to date level of detail. The kit itself was built, using the Eduard PE set and the very good Azimut conversion set, to make one of the very rare final versions. A little sanding and filing was needed to attach the new resin cabin to the injection molded front. Everything else was straight forward. Modelkasten Tracks and Wheels were used to enhance the detail. The cabin and rear tarps were made with white glue and tissue on a plastic sheet structure.
I have spray painted the vehicle with Tamiya dark yellow first. Then I sprayed the upper surfaces with lightened dark yellow. Next I have applied some scratches and chips with German grey and a toothpick. The whitewash was sprayed cloudy with Tamiya flat white. I took a lot of care, not to apply the white too thick, as I wanted the dark yellow to shine through. Again I chipped the paint with German grey and dark yellow. At least I have dusted the model with flat earth, again from Tamiya. The Tarps were sprayed with olive drab first, and then with several shades of olive.
