AEC 850 FWD R6T

Model by George Moore

The AEC 850 FWD R6T was used by the BEF in Belgium and France, as a recovery vehicle for light tanks, Carriers, Dragons, softskin vehicles, this was a version of the AEC initially designed for towing the 3" AA gun.

The model is entirely scratch-built from my own photographs and measurements taken from a preserved example of the gun towing version, currently on display at the IWM museum Duxford. The IWM also has some "in service" photographs, and Les Freathy was kind enough to send me details from his collection.

This was quite a major undertaking, as every item was scratchbuilt, and it was important to get everything to fit, the rear body and cab were straightforward, but the fuel tank rests on cast frames, and surrounded by an angle iron frame. Eventually, I made drawings 4x scale size, to enable all the details to be included, reduced these down to the scale, and then photo-copied them onto 5thou plasticard sheet. I then used various plasticard strip to build up the detail onto the "plan". This ensued that everything lined up, and centres for the transverse rods and winch were all in line.

Quite a major undertaking, I did get a lot of satisfaction in building this model, and it is a subject that is unlikely ever to come out as a kit.
