Crusader Mk 1 Restoration Project

Model by Andrew Johnson

Perhaps the most evocative parts of tank museums are the parks of recovered tanks waiting to be restored. This is my imagining of a Crusader Mk 1 in such a park. I was stimulated by the Cavalier at Bovington Tank museum.

As everyone knows the Italeri kit is a good start to building a Crusader but you need a bit of TLC to bring them up to scratch. Most wrecks have long since lost their mud guards so you need to add more detail to the lower hull. In this case the bolts which connect the outer shell over the Christie suspension to the inner hull had to be added. I guessed the turret bin would also have gone, so the bolts had to return their too! I suspected that the main armament and engine would also have been removed in the distant past, hence the turret alignment which would have allowed engine removal. I built the rust up most where water would collect, particularly on the inside. Of course I had to scratch build the fuel tanks in the engine bay. I guessed the tanks would be aluminium and hence not rust like the rest of the vehicle.

Hope you enjoy,
Andrew
