"A Walk In The Sun"

Diorama by Jose T Rodriguez

This diorama is called "A Walk In The Sun", it captures a moment from an old book photograph that I saw about 10 years ago. This photograph showed a group of German Army Infantry passing a Panther G that was undergoing some quick engine repair work during a lull in the fighting for Normandy, 1944.

The kit used is the Tamiya Panther V/G early version. The model was super detailed with Aber photo-etched metal parts, and features a complete interior scratched built from styrene plastic card using the books Ryton "Panther In Detail", and the Spielberger book "Panther & Its Variants" as a reference source. The tracks are FruilModelismo metal tracks featuring the old system of linking.

The figures are also Tamiya. They are, Tamiya German infantry walking, Tamiya mechanics, and the figure included with the Panther kit. Tamiya paints were used on the vehicle as well as on all the figures. The base is made of plaster and is sold by Farina Enterprises of Massachusetts.

The hedge rows were made with roots that were gathered in my large back yard and woods. The best time to gather large roots is after a very heavy rain storm. When the ground is nice and soaked, go and find a somewhat medium sized, or small tree that is not in the immediate viewing area (the wife will go crazy is you destroy her view of the woods), and using a pair of good rubber gloves proceed to pull the tree slowly until the roots are exposed. Do not pull the whole tree out, when it is semi out, dig around it with your gloved hands and carefully pull it out without damaging the fine root endings.

The leaves and the covering for the hedge rows was made by using (2) shades of green flocking held together with a can of spray glue adhesive used by decorators and artist. This was built up using many different layers. Finally I sprinkled some seasoning leaves appropriated from the wife's pantry room that included Basil, and Oregano. I now have a well seasoned and tasty diorama, add some lettuce and tomatoes, and it is ready to eat.
