Panther Ausf. G (early)

Model by Michael Bedard

I actually started this kit back in the 1990s some time. I put it on my priority ‘to do’ list for 2005. I just finished it in June 2007. It is the Tamiya Panther Ausf. G early kit. Additions to the kit were On-The-Mark photo-etch set, Jordi Rubio barrel, Hudson & Allen tow cables, Moskit exhaust, Tank Workshop muzzle brake cover, Jaguar MG ammo pouch, Fine Molds periscopes and Tamiya individual link tracks. I know Panther purists don’t like solid guide horns but I had the set and decided to use it. I will brag a little in that I did the master for Tank Workshop muzzle brake cover (so I won’t say how good it might be).

I made the zimmerite using Rock Hard Putty, artist acrylic paint and an X-Acto saw blade. Though not common, a few Panthers did have this pattern zimmerite. Nice thing about this type of zimmerite is that it can be easily wiped off with a rag and water if you don’t like the results. You can also chip it like the actual zimmerite once dry. Jack block was carved from basswood. Brass rod and Aber P.E. chains were used for the entire tie down pins for tools and tracks.

Finishing was accomplished using Tamiya and PollyScale acrylics. Weathering is my usual method of rusting agents, pigments, oil & watercolor paints.

I may not be as prolific as J.W. but at least I got another model finished. One of these days I’m going to have and finish a Sherman again.
