E-100

Model by Rob Mackie

The E-100 Super Heavy Tank was a parallel development of the Maus. Its turret was virtually identical and armament was to consist of a 15cm main gun and a coaxial mounted KwK44 7.5cm gun. Development was started in 1943, but received low priority when development of super heavy tanks gave way to more urgent projects in 1944. The chassis of the one and only prototype was virtually complete when the war ended in 1945, only lacking a turret. The vehicle was to have weighed 140 tons, and it featured removable side armour shields (hoisted in place by a turret mounted lifting apparatus) to facilitate rail transport.

Cromwell Models of Glasgow produces this 1/76th scale kit. It is one half of a two model set in Cromwell's "Classic" series, the other vehicle being the more well known Maus super heavy tank. It is of all resin construction. The tracks are finely cast resin lengths which, when heated with a hair dryer, fit snugly over the individual road wheels. The kit captures the subtle curves of the E-100's front and side armour, a tribute to the fine work of the master builder. Cromwell is known for its high production standards, and this kit is an especially good example. There were no pin-holes and minimal flash, and construction was straightforward. Also included are two figures, one of which is shown.

The kit was built out of the box, with the exception of some minor embellishments. I added armoured hoods to the turret periscopes, as well as turret lift hooks and a "ladder" leading up the vehicle's side. Decals and miscellaneous tools came from the spares box. The base coat is Humbrol #94 dark yellow, with oversprays of Gunze red brown and medium green.
