I was planning to build this model for a few last years, but hoped that DML, AFV or Trumpeter will release it. Tamiya's is quite old, so a lot of scratch building and upgrades were needed. But when the Construction Contest was announced on Track-Link I decided to start building old Japanese. It was started at the end of April 2007. The vehicle from Hermann Goring panzer division was chosen as a prototype. I decided to illustrate the process of building in step-by-step photos. Hope it will help other modelers in building their Sd.Kfz.7.

Photos 1 and 2 show the construction of frame and upgrades which are needed. The hexagonal nuts are from Master Club.

Photos 3,4,5 show the process of construction of running gear. And illustrate my method of making manufacturer's name on tires and rims. The letters were taken from Dragon's Sd.Kfz.251 inner wheels.

Photos 6 and 7 -- construction of the front suspension. The tires were taken from Dragon's Flak 37. Nipples are from Model-Point's nickel tubes. Also Lion Roar's plastic rods 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mm diameter were used.

Photos 8 and 9 -- detailing of the cabin and front part of the vehicle. Here was used PE set from Lion Roar LAM 036, brass indicators from Voyager, Notek from MIG, details from Tamiya's on-vehicle equipment set and headlights from ELF.

Photos 10,11,12 -- construction of armor. Here is illustrated my method of making half-round rivets with help of soft abrasive 3M.

Photo 13 -- construction of Flak platform.

Photos 14 and 15 describe the detailing of Flak 37. The perfect barrel LB3513 from Lion Roar was used here.

Photos 16 and 17 show the construction of ammunition trailer. The trailer was taken from Tamiya's Flak 37 kit (35145). The upper structure was totally scratch-built. The locks are taken from used PE set for Pz IV.

Finally I added number plates. They are PE from Aber.

The process of painting will be described in the second part.
