Ukranian T-84U Oplot

Model by James Wechsler

This is a model of a modern day Ukranian T-84U Oplot MBT which is in prototype/development. Not familiar with this tank? It's a derivative of the T-84U which is in turn a derivative of the T-84 which is a derivative of the T-80UD which is a derivative of the T-80.

In cronological order, the T-80UD was diesel powered version of the T-80 developed in near the end of the Soviet era. After the breakup, both the Russians and Ukranians had T-80 production facilities.

The Ukranians developed a welded turret for a variety of reasons and this variant became the T-84. Then they made a number of upgrades including new fire control systems, ERA, anti-missile systems, and APU and this became the T-84U. Now the Ukranians have replaced the hull mounted autoloader with a new design mounted in an armored box on the back of the turret, thus creating the T-84U Oplot. Of course there are a long list of other enhancements but these are the basics.

Being a prototype, the Oplot can be seen with the 125mm gun with and without (shown here) a thermal jacket as well as a new 120mm gun firing NATO compatible ammo. It also can be seen with the T-80 style all metal tracks as well as the rubber pad version shown on the model.

Obviously this kit is a major kitbash/conversion project and the bulk of the changes are best described in the 'inprogress' photo. Finishing was done with Model Master enamels, oil washes, and some pigments.
