This is the Trumpeter Sturer Emil kit. I used the Eduard PE set, Armor Scale metal ammo, Jordi Rubio metal barrel, and Friulmodelismo metal track. The figures are original the Tamiya Panzer crew at rest, however two of the figure were converted, to represent the crew of Wagon 2 of the Panzer Jaeger Abteilung 521, in the Allied and Axis #4, on page 75, hence the last picture of this submission.
I am not going to go into a lengthy description of the vehicle as there is a lot reference material out there, and from of the some of the other modeling magazines I’ve seen, the Sturer Emil has even been built and painted in a tri color camouflage. But be assured, it was most definitely only painted in Panzer gray, with possibly a winter white wash in the winter of 42-43 for Wagon 2.
The model was painted using Vallejo colors, filter with Life color filters and washed and dry brushed with oils. I can’t remember how many different washes and filters I used; I know it was a lot. The tarp and muzzle cover were made with duro putty and painted with oils, to achieve a subtle color blending. I wanted to avoid the typical dry brushing of the accessories, that’s why I used oils. After a dusting with Tamiya Earth colors, the entire model was weathered using Pastel chalks and Artist Pigments. I didn’t want to dirty up the model to much, as I wanted it to represent the picture and therefore be dustier, then caked full of mud. I purposely omitted the foliage on the sides, as it would have covered up much of the tools, and as the author mentions, it was without success.
The figures were converted using Magic Sculpt and Duro Putty. I never used Duro Putty to convert a figure, so I wanted to try it. I have to say it is much better for tarps and bags then for converting figures. So I will keep on using Magic Sculpt. As usual the figures were painted using oils for the flesh and Vallejo black for the uniforms. I used the Vallejo Panzer gray to highlight the creases and Artists sepia ink for the boots, belts, and holsters. Archer dry transfers were used for the uniforms insignias.
