Steyr type 1500A with 20mm Flak Gun

The Steyr truck with 20mm Flak gun may be the easiest conversion you could ever do. My first conversion effort, I was inspired by the plans out of a recent (circa early 1999) Tamiya Model Magazine.

This base of this kit is, of course, the new Tamiya Stery. For the flak gun and pylon mount I used the old Tamiya 250/9, but if you consider doing this, I would suggest using the new DML 250/9 for the 20mm, as it is more detailed and an equally good fit.

The figures are Tamiya, with Ultracast heads. The copious stowage is from the spares bin, but of particular note are the German helmets with liners by Ultracast, which are fantastic - simply add foil chin straps. Also, the gun barrel is turned aluminium from the new Elefant line - thanks to Rick Young for that one, this is a marked improvement over the kit line.

Mating the 20mm Flak gun to the Steyr truck was a field modification created by Rommel's army in the North African desert campaign. I wanted the finish to show a vehicle what was in near constant use, with very little attention to maintanence. As such, I painted the vehicle in lightened Tamiay desert yellow (20% white added).

Weathering was accomplished with Windsor-Newton oils, mixed to panzer-grey and applied so as to indicate the hastily applied yellow overcoat wearing away unevenly in the sand-blasting winds.
