"Bear in the Woods"

Diorama by Brent McCombs

This vignette features a DML figure from the "Soviet Anti-Tank Team 1942-43". The figure uniform and kit are base coated in Humbrol enamels and shaded with oils. Flesh, what little of it can be seen, is done in a quickie effort approximating "The Bannerman Way". I say quickie, because you really can't see the face that well from any angle, which a definate benefit to my resin-dependant figure painting skills. The AT weapon is flat humbrol black dry brushed with Citadel dull steel

Groundwork is a mixture of dark brown Railroad fine gravel (Hudson & Allen?), white glue and medium brown poster paint. I also added just a touch of water to make the mix more workable (if you try this, add water sparingly or it will get soupy really fast). Anyway, this stuff was spread over the wooden base ($2 at a local hardware big-box store, and 'stained' with two burnt umber oil washes) and left to set up for about 10 mins. After this, static grass (three shades) and Hudson and Allen 'fall leaves' were spread on, and the boulder (a stone from the front yard, chosen by my wife and washed up) were added. The tree is from some plants in my back yard, I have no idea what they are, but they look ok once painted brown and dry brushed with varying greens and tans. The long grass is also from the Railway section of the hobby shop, and was added with just a smidge of white glue (and no more than a smidge - smidge and a half just won't do, and two smidges is right out!).

Anyway, I've just started making these scenic vignettes and find Pastel chalks simply invaluable. All of the base is dusted in varying shades -at least 5. Even the figure is dusted to blend in with the ground work (afterall, the soldier IS laying prone, and may have even crawled into position).

I have made this vignette as my first of three entries for the Maritime Modelers' Meet 2001. The special theme category in figures this coming show is "Any box-stock DML figure in 1/35 scale". I have started working on my second and third entries this week.
