In 1943, new generation of heavy Soviet tanks entered production - the Iosef (Josef) Stalin series. IS-1 was development of KV series heavy tanks with numerous improvements and modifications. IS-1 was a step in the development of IS-2 and only some 102 were produced in 1943. Early tanks were armed with 85mm gun just as T-34/85 and late with 100mm gun and were operated by four men crew. In 1944, existing IS-1 were rearmed with 122mm guns and were followed by IS-2, which was an improved version and was to be the main production model. From 1943 to the end of the war some 3854 IS-2 tanks including rebuild IS-1 tanks were produced. IS-3 entered service in mid 1945 and saw service in post-war years.
