The Sd. Kfz. 223 belongs to one of my favorites, and I was very satisfied, when Tank Workshop (TTW) came out with an interior set two years ago. I ordered it right after releasing, but what I've got was slightly disappointing. The kit contains new floor, rear bulkhead, drivers compartment, radio equipment,  MG turret mounting and a lot of interior equipment. Let's take a closer look at the pieces.

Floor + Bulkhead

The floor has an incorrect criss-cross anti-skid pattern (should be dotted, as usual in german AFV's) and is best replaced with appropriate offerings from Eduard or ABER. The three piece rear bulkhead is usable, but the centre section could be replaced with wire mesh to get that special appearance of the original.

Drivers compartment

The conversion provides the modeler with a basic instrument panel, two levers, steering wheel and its base. Also some visor ports and incorrect seats for both driver and radio operator are included. Unfortunately a lot of equipment in this area was ommited (batteries + their racks, small details in front of the driver etc.) and the rest was simplified.

Radio equipment

Radio equipment consists of a copied FuG 8 from the old Tamiya's Sd. 250/3 and two large boxes which capture the look of the original quite well (one of them does and one of the doesn't). Again, a lot of extra equipment has to be added, and only little from TTW kit can be used. One of the biggest downsides of the kit is that TTW didn't reproduce the large cranking device for the aerial, which is quite prominent when looking into the interior.

MG turret mounting

TTW provides basic parts which are needed for the turret mounting, unfortunately the detail is (very) soft and mostly inaccurate (ammo bin, seat, the whole mount). I would therefore recommend to use some of the parts as a guide and try to scratchbuilt the whole assembly, as the TTW's offering doesn't capture the look of the original. The rare photos of MG turret are published in the "Samochody pancerne 4x4".

Ammunition and crew equipment

The Sd.Kfz 223 vehicles carried 1350 rounds of MG ammo in 9 soft bags (150 rounds each), which were common to all german AFV's (Pz. 1-5, Tiger). TTW provided standard infantry ammo cans (250rounds) which are incorrect, and should be replaced with aftermarket offerings (Royal Models). There are 3 sets of messkits and gas masks for the crew, but again a lot of other details were forgotten.

All in all, if you want to give your little 223 a complete interior, Tank Workshop is probably not the way to go. Anybody, who cares at least a little about accuracy cannot use this interior set without major update, and at the end only few of the original parts will be used (mostly as templates). As I know that other TTW offerings are well done and based on good research, this is probably an exception in their otherwise fine product line.
